Stop corporate abuse in the Niger Delta

Imagine that your community is home to rich natural resources like oil, gold or bauxite. Wouldn’t you want to have a say in how corporations who extract those resources operate? If the corporations polluted your local environment, wouldn’t you want them to be held accountable?
Corporations frequently exploit the weak regulatory systems in many poor countries, making people living in poverty some of the most vulnerable to corporate human rights abuses.
Many communities who live in resource rich regions face toxic pollution, putting their health at risk, making their food and drinking water unsafe, and damaging their livelihoods. People living in the oil-producing areas of Nigeria’s Niger Delta have seen their human rights undermined by an industry that their government cannot or will not hold to account.

Amnesty International is highly committed to campaigning for stronger regulation of companies worldwide. We have made the issue of oil pollution in the Niger Delta a priority campaign as a part of our 50th anniversary activities.
Over the coming year, we will be campaigning to stop corporate abuse in the Niger Delta. We will urge the Nigerian government and the multinational oil companies to commit to a clean up of polluted areas. The government must also ensure the oil industry is properly held to account and that victims have access to justice.
Take action! Tell the President of Nigeria to commit to a clean up operation and effectively regulate the oil industry.
